Reviews
- September 1999 - Popular Science - "Dissections of the Real Brain" is chosen as one
of its "50 Best of the Web"
"It's the part of the body that most makes us what we are, but one we rarely
get to see. Perhaps for good reason--you may want to examine these photos
of real human brains before lunch. Still, it's as fascinating as it is icky.
The site itself is a bit on the clinical side (it's part of the Virtual
Hospital, which is mainly a resource for doctors and other health care workers),
but oh those pictures...."
- July 8, 1999 - The New York Times
"The anatomy of the brain is the most difficult of any part of the body
to visualize, with complicated structures crumpled together into a space
the size of a cantaloupe.Neuroanatomists at the University of Iowa have
put together a set of detailed photographs of sections of the human brain,
with schematic drawings that allow each structure to be identified. The
result is the equivalent of a very good textbook of brain anatomy."

- July 23, 2001: (The
Human Brain) - "I just spent two hours surfing your site on brains.
What an awesome presentation. I can almost smell the formaldehyde. It's
been 25 years since my chiropractic dissection... needless to say, I've
forgotten a few things. But with your website, I'm going to start doing
brain surgery tomorrow! What can go wrong? Seriously, your site is not only
well-rounded, factual and readable, it is also navigable. Hugs to y'all.
Thanks for such a painstaking labor of love in neuroanatomy. To quote Schwarzenegger:
'I'll be back.'" - S.K., D.C.
- May 25, 2001: (The
Human Brain) - "Of the hundreds of Websites that I have searched over
the last year, yours showed detail, all-inclusiveness, and perfect labeling.
You have done a wonderful job on this Website. So much in fact, I'm going
to study all those intricate details of the graphics present, then call
my neurosurgeon and fill him in on my all-encompassing knowledge of the
brain. It really is a wonderful Website, you should be very proud of your
accomplishments!!" - G.B.
- April 26, 2001: (The
Human Brain) - "This virtual hospital is really detailed, and I really
liked it. I had to do a project in biology, to mold a brain and label it,
the detailed description at this site was really helpful, thank you." -
H.
- April 3, 2001: (The
Human Brain) - "My 8-year-old son is studying the nervous system, he
loved seeing the brain sections. He has to complete a project and a report
and now he is really excited about doing the project. Thanks for your wonderful
site!" - S.K.
- >August 19, 2000: (The
Human Brain) - "I liked the user-friendly set up, the high quality pictures
and the depth of information. I am tryng to learn brain structures for an
exam. Seeing your pictures has made it so much clearer where they actually
lie. I will be recommending the site to the 700 other students in my psychology
subject, via our internet bulletin board." A.D.
- August 2, 2000: (The
Human Brain) - "I was looking for good cross sections of brains for
an art project (I am a professional artist), and yours are absolutely the
best I've found. Thank you very much!" - G.H.
- January 29, 2000: (The
Human Brain) - "Thank you to everyone who has worked on and contributed
to this site. It is truly an amazing place! I have sent your URL to at least
a dozen of my friends and 'The Virtual Hospital: The Human Brain' is in
my 'favorite places' folder. Keep up the great work and thanks again!" -
R.W.
- October 1, 1999: (The
Human Brain) - "I was doing a search on the human brain. What an informative
website. The use of dissections is wonderful. I'm sure I will be visiting
here again. Thanks!" - K.C.
- June 3, 1999: (The
Human Brain) - "I am a neurosurgical critical care RN looking to further
expand my knowledge base of neuroanatomy. I find the content of the Virtual
Hospital web page extremely useful. Please DON'T move it to another site
without e-mailing notification. What a GREAT page to refer patients and
their families to who wish to expand their understanding of the structure
and function of the brain and the results of traumatic brain injury." -
S.S.L., R.N.
