University of Iowa Family Practice Handbook, Fourth Edition
How many times have you heard “Youre too smart to go into Family Practice?” or “Why would you want to do Family Practice?”
Well, I have news for our colleagues. Family Practice can be one of the most difficult, challenging, intellectually stimulating, and rewarding fields in medicine. You not only need to have the knowledge base specific to family medicine, you also have to be a competent internist and pediatrician among other skills.
It is with this scope of family medicine in mind that we have created the fourth edition of the University of Iowa Family Practice Handbook. Each concise and authoritative chapter has been written or reviewed by a Family Practice resident or fellow to make sure that the information is relevant to your practice. Several new topics have been added since the last edition, and all of the therapeutics have been updated. We have included evidence-based information about herbal medications, including side effects and drug interactions. This edition has also been reorganized to make information easier to find.
This edition should also be quite useful for medical students, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. It covers a broad spectrum of both outpatient and inpatient medicine yet can still easily fit in a pocket.
As always, we are open to feedback both positive and negative (although this never happens!). Feel free to write me at mark-graber@uiowa.edu or from our web site at www.uiowa.edu/~famprac. We take your comments seriously and incorporate your ideas into each new edition. Enjoy.
