Endoscopy has become the method of choice to diagnose and often also treat esophageal diseases. However, radiologic contrast studies remain an important diagnostic tool. While even the barium swallow with double contrast does not provide a resolution of mucosal details comparable to that of endoscopy, radiologic examinations are superior in identifying perforations, changes in esophageal function due to extraluminal compression and motility disorders. Especially the cine esophagram or "cookie swallow" is the diagnostic test of choice when evaluating patients with symptoms of oropharyngeal dysphagia. In the following, I will provide a brief introduction into radiological techniques supplemented by images to illustrate key findings. This short review is meant to complement information contained in textbooks or reviews.
