Harold P. Adams, Jr., M.D.


There are about 500,000 cases of stroke in the United States each year. In one of his Virtual Hospital textbooks, Dr. Harold Adams describes the term stroke as: a common term that has come to describe a variety of conditions more accurately called Cerebrovascular Disease, which all involve a disturbance in blood flow to the brain.

Dr. Adams and his colleagues in the University of Iowa Department of Neurology research the causes and treatment of stroke, care for stroke victims and their families, and prepare specialists in stroke and other diseases of the brain.

Dr. Adams' Virtual Hospital books approach the causes of stroke, its treatment, and care of stroke victims from both the vantage point of the care giver and the patient. His books include:

Dr. Adams joined the University faculty in 1976 and is currently a professor of neurology in the UI Carver College of Medicine. He received the M.D. degree from Northwestern University and completed a residency in neurology at the University of Iowa's Hospitals and Clinics. He has received several teaching awards presented by his medical students, and is consistently listed among America's Best Doctors.
