Jeffrey Galvin, M.D.

Dr. Jeffrey Galvin's books on chest imaging and lung diseases are at the very heart of Virtual Hospital's textbooks for physicians. Dr. Galvin was one of three physicians who founded Virtual Hospital in 1992.

While his first electronic textbooks used the CD-ROM format, in Dr. Galvin's mind, the infant World Wide Web presented a tantalizing way for educational text and graphics to be delivered to a health care provider right where he or she would need it. Under his guidance, Virtual Hospital published on the Internet as a Gopher site in 1992 and later as one of the first 250 sites on the World Wide Web in 1993.

During his tenure as professor of radiology at the University of Iowa, Dr. Galvin also created and co-directed the Electric Differential Multimedia Laboratory, the publisher of Virtual Hospital.

Dr. Galvin received his medical degree from Northwestern University and completed residencies in internal medicine at Grand Rapids, Michigan, and in radiology at the University of Iowa and a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Iowa. His clinical and research interests include chest and cardiovascular imaging and medical informatics. He currently is the Director of Chest and Mediastinal Imaging at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C., and is a professor of diagnostic radiology at the University of Maryland.
