Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)

Clinical Presentation:
Rarely results in congestive heart failure. Is most commonly diagnosed during routine well child visits. Is the most common congenital heart disease to present in adults.

Etiology/Pathophysiology:
There are 3 types:

The end result is a left to right shunt.

Pathology:
Not applicable

Imaging Findings:
The left to right shunt causes shunt vascularity with right heart dilation, but the left atrium does not enlarge because blood is shunted across it to the right atrium. Heart size and pulmonart vascular prominence depend on the size of shunt.
