Benign Cortical Defect (Nonossifying Fibroma)

Clinical Presentation:
Asymptomatic. Incidentally discovered on radiographs obtained for other reasons.

Etiology/Pathophysiology:
Are benign lesions located in the cortex. Initially are close to the physis but end up in diaphysis with growth. Etiology is unsettled. Are obliterated over time. Distal femur and proximal tibia are most common sites. Can be multiple and bilateral. Found in 40% of boys and 30% of girls, peak at 5-6 years old, and rare before 18 months.

Pathology:
Not applicable

Imaging Findings:
Classically are well marginated, mulitlobulated oval lucency with slightly sclerotic margins in the cortex.
