Ewing Sarcoma

Michael P. D'Alessandro, M.D.
Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

Clinical Presentation:
Pain and local swelling. Fever, tenderness, warmth and a palpable mass are common. Anemia, leukocytosis, and an increased sedimentation rate may falsely suggest an inflammatory etiology. Peaks in incidence at 5-14 years old.

Etiology/Pathophysiology:
Highly malignant. Lower extremities are the most frequent site. Most commonly arises in the metaphysis where the lesions are eccentric, next most frequently in the diaphysis where the lesions are central in location. Late metastases are characteristic, particularly to other bones.

Pathology:
Not applicable

Imaging Findings:
Usually purely lytic, may be lytic with a periosteal reaction, rarely are sclerotic. The bone destruction is usually permeative in appearance and the periosteal new bone has an onion skin appearance.
